Getting a puppy is a huge step for anyone and if it's your first puppy it's important to know what to expect. We've put together our top tips on preparing for and welcoming your new best friend.

Before you bring puppy home be sure to puppy-proof your home  making sure that  such things as cleaning products, cables and anything else they shouldn’t chew, is not accessible.

Make sure your garden is secure and there are no gaps they could squeeze through or dig under.

Here is a list of a few things you will need to buy before puppy arrives.

  • Food and water bowl
  • Crate and or bed
  • Brush and comb
  • Collar and ID tag
  • Toys
  • Collar and lead. We recommend a harness
  • Blankets

When you get puppy home, take them outside to show them where the toilet area is. Puppies need the toilet regularly especially after meals and sleeping, stay with your puppy and once they have been to the toilet give them lots of praise and a treat.

Show Pup where there crate/bed area is and also where the water bowl is.

Introducing new things to puppies can get them over excited or stressed, so we recommend not giving your puppy access to your whole house on the first day.

Allow them to explore their new surroundings in their own time, making sure that you keep your house nice and calm.

Keep to the same feeding routine as the breeder.

Puppies need to be fully vaccinated before going on any walks, so stick to the garden for now. You can get them used to wearing their harness/collar and lead ready for when walks start.

Puppies need lots of sleep around 18-20 hours a day. So don't be surprised to find your puppy sleeping a lot.

We advise sleeping in the same room as your pup for the first few nights, as they may get scared or anxious. If they cry or bark, it's ok to comfort them. They will also need toilet breaks during the night.

Make time to spend with your puppy and play with them, keep play sessions short as they will tire quickly.

Socialisation is super important for your puppy and can start once your puppy has settled in. A few things you can do are

Sitting on your doorstep and letting puppy watch the world go by, exposing them to different sights and sounds.

Visit the vets, get your puppy used to the sights and sounds and different smells.

Ensuring your puppy has positive interactions with other dog and pups and people.

Never force your puppy to interact with or go into situations they are uncomfortable with.

Don't allow your puppy to interact with very person or dog they see or being allowed to do a free for all play with other dogs.
